The Roy Hill Community Foundation (RHCF) brought a group of 40 community members and supporters together to celebrate the outstanding efforts of the Pilbara Mentors Program.

RHCF Board members, school principals, mentors, EdConnect staff and families celebrated at a wonderful dinner sponsored by ESS Compass at Gateway Village in south Hedland.

RHCF Management Committee Chairman Barry Fitzgerald welcomed attendees and spoke about his connection to the Hedland community and the impact of the Roy Hill Community Foundation’s work. A keen advocate for the Hedland community, Barry emphasised the importance of mentoring programs in supporting young people to realise their full potential.

Shane Cable, Chair of the Foundation’s Education Working Group also took the opportunity to voice his support of the program and thank attendees and mentors for their efforts.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the inaugural Pilbara Mentors Volunteer of the Year Award.

Karen Munro, a Pilbara Mentor since 2016 was presented with the award by EdConnect Australia Chair, Norma Jeffery.

Along with other Pilbara Mentors, Karen undertook a competitive selection process that included an interview and performance review against criteria such as reliability, creativity, adaptability and length of service to ultimately take out the award.

All attendees agreed that the evening was a great success and a wonderful way to recognise and celebrate the important work of the Pilbara Mentors Program.
